The Gayatri Mantra is the most sacred of the Vedic Hymns. Considered to be one of the most important mantras in Hinduism, it may be regarded as both an instrument for waking up the mind and gathering energy, as well as for attaining Self-realization (Moksha) through meditation. The mantra is expressed by three Sanskrit words: "Om bhur bhuvah svaha tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo nah prachodayat" English translation: "O God! Thou art Brahman, Thou art Vishnu! Thou art Rudra, thou art Agni - fire. Thou art all the Gods! Thou art the Veda, thou art the sacrifice, thou art the one who invokes and thou art me! May we meditate on that excellent glory of thine. May knowledge of the Atman come to us!" The Gayatri Mantra is a text from Vedas used for meditation and devotion. The mantra draws a common cultural thread through a diversity of religious practices. The text is used in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. It is one of the five basic daily prayers prescribed for all practicing Hindus. It is said that the Gayatri mantra is as old as Vedas and was used for awakening the mind and as a tool to keep it alert. This Hymn or Mantra can be used as a prayer or as an invocation for blessing. It has been used as a traditional Hindu prayer before repasts, recitations of the Vedas and at times of meditation. Throughout the millennia, many different meanings and interpretations of this hymn have been given by various authors. There are conflicting opinions on which mantra is to be recited first; however, most Hindus recite it at sunrise with one or more other mantras (such as Bhagavadgita) and meditation at the end of each day. The Gayatri mantra is, according to the Right Angle Association, an "ancient Hindu prayer word that has been described as 'one of the most powerful words in all of human culture'". The mantra appears in the Atharvaveda, which is one of the oldest collections of Vedic Sanskrit texts. The Gayatri Mantra consists of three verses. Each verse is a prayer to one of the Hindu trinity gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Below are the lines from the Gayatri Mantra in Sanskrit followed by the English translation that best reflects its original meaning. cfa1e77820
